On Nov. 4 I voted. It was empowering. It was also about as stressful as watching the Patriots play with Brady on the sidelines. You see, I am Catholic and believe in the sanctity of life. But, as a progressive 21-year-old interacting in this world, I believe in women’s rights--something that the Catholic Church, in the opinion of some, has been disregarding for some time now.
Many of my Catholic brethren assault me with claims that I support the killing of babies. Let me defend myself with some script: I do not advocate the death of babies. Let me say that again--I do not advocate the death of babies. What I do advocate, however, is the choice and freedom of a woman to do what she wishes to do with her own body. I am not pro-abortion. I am pro-choice.
What really strikes me, is that many of my Catholic comrades, most of whom are politically conservative, express their strong opinion that the government should have very little to do with their money in the sense of taxes. And yet, they support the government to regulate what women should be able to do with their own bodies. Regulating the human body over monetary issues--let’s be frank--that’s messed up.
I balance my faith and my politics. If the Catholic Church ever wants to board the women’s rights express, I’ll gladly save them a seat. Now, I realize that the issue of abortion is one issue of many regarding the rights of women, and the Catholic Church supports women on many issues, but let’s be real--regulating what you can do with your body seems like a big deal to me.
This is my balancing act. Every Sunday, I go to church and as a matter of fact, I do ask God for forgiveness for many of my political views. Despite lacking in female reproductive equipment, I hope people, women especially, can support my stance on this controversial issue. |
